Zhang Zhung Scripts

Introduction

These pages are devoted to the following scripts found in Bön texts :

The Greater and Lesser sMar scripts are collectively known as sMar-yig སྨར་ཡིག (sMar scripts), and supposedly originate from the pre-Buddhist Tibetan Kingdom of Zhang Zhung ཞང་ཞུང་. The Greater and Lesser sPungs scripts are collectively known as sPungs-yig སྤུངས་ཡིག (sPungs scripts), and supposedly originate from the country of sTag gZig སྟག་གཟིག (probably representing Tajik, an old name for Persia) to the west of Zhang Zhung. The Bru-sha script supposedly originates from the country of Brusha (possibly representing Burushaski, and thus identified with Gilgit in Pakistan). As these scripts are all associated with the pre-Buddhist Zhang Zhung culture I refer to them collectively as Zhang Zhung scripts on these pages.
